Tips for Styling a Pear Shape

I'm excited to be back again this week to share tips for styling a pear shape. Last week I covered dressing for an hourglass shape here, in case you missed it, and that happens to be your shape. When creating this post I found some great tips on The Chic Fashionista, let credit be given when it is due : ) Not sure if the pear shape applies to you, here are some of the characteristics:
  • You have a well-defined waist
  • You're bust and shoulders are narrower than your hem-line
  • Your thighs and rear might be full and rounded
  • You might have short, full, or muscular legs
I actually had two readers share pictures, and both have different styles, so I'll be creating looks for two different ladies today.  First fellow blogger at Bookworm 1858, the lovely Stephanie.  It seems she already knows a number of the tips I'm going to share today, she looks great in this a-line dress! I asked her some questions and am excited to create some looks for her today too.

If this fits your body type, utilize the tips below to look your best each day.

Work to highlight your upper-body. You can do this by:
  • Wearing statement necklaces
  • Wearing scarves
  • Wearing a horizontal neckline to elongate the appearance of your shoulders to make them look more proportionate to your hips, like a boat neck
  • Wearing patterned tops and prints to draw attention upward
  • Wearing a light-colored or bright top and dark bottoms
There are also a few ways to downplay your curves, if you'd like. You can do this by:
  • Wearing dark colors
  • Wearing tops, sweaters, and jackets that hit below the hipbone
  • Avoid wearing lengths that hit across the widest part of your hip.
  • Wearing heels to elongate your legs
  • Wearing wide leg, flare, or boot cut-this will help lengthen your legs and draw attention away from your hips.
  • Wearing A-line, flowy, and maxi skirts
Keeping these tips in mind, I worked to create a work look for Stephanie.  She said she likes to dress up with pencil skirts and blouses and love pastel colors.  I picked a great peplum top in a light color to accentuate her small waist.  The structure and neckline will also help even out pear shaped proportions.   I chose a black pencil skirt to downplay her curves, and I also added a cardigan for layering, although, this outfit would be great on her without the cardigan too.  Also, in keeping with the tips listed above I chose a statement necklace to draw the attention up and chic black heels to lengthen her legs.  Heels with straps tend to cut off the leg, so if you want to look taller, steer clear of that style of heel.

Work Wear- pear

On the weekend Stephanie likes to keep it casual.  I chose a great straight leg jean and short boot with a heel to elongate her legs.  She also said she polka dots, so I chose a great button down to go under this wine colored sweater that will look great with her hair and skin tone.  I also added a statement necklace to draw our attention up, then simple studs and a watch.
Weekend Wear-pear

Stephanie said she loves to get dressed up for date nights and loves all shades of blue too.  I found this beautiful a-line dress for her.  The neckline will help to even out pear shaped proportions and the darts will help to elongate her figure, and the simple flare will help draw attention away from her hips and onto her tiny waist.  I picked out some great statement jewelry match, a basic black cardigan for layering, and a great leopard heel to finish the look off.

The next reader I'll be creating some outfits for is Renae.  Her style differs from Stephanie's so it'll give you even some more options for things to wear if you happen to be pear shaped. : )

Renae typically wears pants to work, so I created workwear options with pants following the tips above.  I picked a dark, straight leg bottom and a bright top to draw attention up. I also thought some fun pattern mixing would be great on a pear shape too, to add interest up as well. I finished it off with a great heel to elongate the leg and some cute bracelets too. Renae will be styling in this for work!

Blouse / Blazer / Pants/ Heel / Coach purse / Bracelet / Bangle / Scarf

Renae says she typically dresses pretty casually on the weekend, so I kept the look pretty simple.  Following the tips above I picked a great dark straight-leg jean and a boatneck tee.  To make the outfit a little special a picked a great bold scaf and pendant necklace to layer and a fun teal flat.  Perfect for wanting to run errands and still look cute.

Renae said that she's like a dressy-casual look for date night.  Following the tips above a created a great date night look for her.  The bright top and dark bottom will help draw attention up and I'm so loving the top I found!  I also chose a great nude heel and beautiful accessories to finish off the look as well.

I also made this handy image for you girls too : )

Preppy

Today I'm feeling pretty preppy in this look.  I love cut of this dress and I've been wanting to layer a chambray with it for quite a while.  I decided to add my fun J.Crew Factory bow cardigan on top and I'm loving the result.  The weather is actually supposed to be making a turn for the better here, 50 degrees people! That means I can actually wear a dress without tights and not freeze to death.  I've really missed wearing a lot of my dresses and skirts, but it's been so stinking cold and I'm just not crazy about tights.

You guys know I love a deal, so when  Coohpons asked me to share their fabulous discounts and promotional offers with you all, I was on board.  They offer coupons to stores like Gap, so you can find yourself a dress similar to the one I'm wearing today, Target, so you can "Buy All the Things," along with hundreds of other retailers. Happy saving!

Also, there are two link-ups on the blog this week!  First is on Wednesday called "Many Days, Many Ways." Link up a new post where you've taken a piece and restyled it many ways.  The link-up button is on my side bar. :)  The second link-up is on Friday called Style Swap.  Pick a blogger buddy to swap styles with and link up your looks this Friday!

Style Swap Link Up, Week Two

I'm excited to be back again this week for our Style Swap Link-up.  Last week I loved Inge's take on Danielle's outfit.  I loved the idea of a boyfriend cardigan with boots and layering a scarf and necklace. I recently got this cardigan for $16 at Loft and have shown it once on Instagram, but not on here yet.  I love the result. Also, it started snowing in the middle of me taking pictures, but I just kept on clicking. : )  I can't wait to see your style swaps this week, link up down below!

The Link-up Details:

Our goal is to help you share your great style, as well as a blogger whose style you love.  Each Friday you can link up in one of two ways:
  1. Pick a blogger buddy and choose to do a “Style Swap” with each other, just like Jenn and I did today.  Pick one of each other’s looks you love and create your own spin on it, therefore “swapping styles,” then link to each other and to us.  This will build your audience in two ways: one, with the blogger collaboration, and two by linking up with us.  Awesome, right?
  2. The second way is to simply choose a blogger you love and take one of their looks and swap your style for theirs.  Then, link to the blogger out of courtesy and link up with us as well.
At the end of each link-up Jenn and I will take one of the looks we love best, and we'll “Style Swap” your look and create our own spin on it.  Then, we'll showcase your look and link to you on the next link-up.

We politely ask that you follow Jenn and I on at least one social media outlet before linking up.  Here's all the links you need to easily follow:

Jenn: Bloglovin / Pinterest / Instagram / Twitter / Facebook
Ginny: Bloglovin / Pinterest /Instagram / Twitter / Facebook / GFC (use button)

Cobalt and Stripes Two Ways

Today I'm going to show you a dressy and casual take on a similar look.  I've really been enjoying dressing up jeans lately, but I really only get to them one day a week at work, that leaves four other work days where I need to dress up. This winter has really make me dress more casually, but I really do love a good skirt, so  I love how easily this outfit can transition from casual to dressy by simply switching the the jeans out for the pencil skirt. I'm not going to lie, after taking these pictures I added tights, it was too cold. The jeans look I wore when it was pretty nice a few weeks ago....maybe I should have worn the skirt then. ;) Speaking of jeans, I'm on the hunt for some new ones, I'm wondering if I should give these a try, being I love everything else from there. What jeans do you love and recommend?

Next Wednesday I'm going to be co-hosting a "Many Days, Many Ways" link-up with Danielle at Goodwillista and and Nicole at Writes Like a Girl.  It will similar to today's post.  Pick an item and create as many looks at you would like with it, then link up with us next Wednesday, the 19th starting at 7:00 A.M.  Here's the button to grab, I'll looking forward to seeing your looks!

I loved seeing everyone's Style Swaps last Friday! I'd love to have you all join me this Friday, details on how to link up here.

Tips for Styling an Hourglass Shape

I'm excited to be starting a series, which I'll post each Tuesday on dressing for your body type.  Today I'll be sharing tips for dressing an hourglass figure, and the beautiful Michelle who blogs about life at from the bleachers... has volunteered to help me out.  We're actually from the same small town, but went to different schools, so we didn't know each other.  She found my blog though another and has been such a great supporter blogging friend since then.  She's pretty stylish on her own, but I'm excited to create some outfits for her today. When creating this post I found some great tips on The Chic Fashionista, let credit be given when it is due : )

If you're not sure if you fit this body type, here are some characteristics:
  • Your bust and shoulders are at the same width as your hips
  • You have a defined waist
  • When gaining weight, you gain it equally throughout your body
  • Your waist is 8" to 12" smaller than your hip or bust measurement
  • Your figure resembles a coke bottle.

If you also have an hourglass figure, your clothing options are nearly limitless, as an hourglass figure can look good in almost anything!

With your waist being defined drawing attention to it, if you're comfortable, will help accentuate your figure.
Some ways to do this are:
  • Wear a belt around the narrowest part of your waist, either on a dress or over a shirt and cardigan
  • Wear a skirt with volume, however with your figure a-line and pencil look great on you too
  • Wear v-neck tops that draw attention to your defined waist
Sometime you might feel your curves need to be down-played, especially in a professional setting.  Some ways to do this are:
  • Wear a monochromatic look
  • Wear straight leg and boot-cut jeans or slacks
  • Wear heels, they elongate your legs
  • Wear tops that extend below your hip-bone
Keeping these tips in mind, I created a work look for Michelle and other women with an hourglass figure too .  Michelle is a physical therapist and needs to wear clothes that allow her to move freely.  She is a fan of pants for work for this reason, and loves layering sweaters with button-ups.  Because of her hourglass figure, wearing this combo is very flattering and shows off her defined waist.  I picked a great bright colored sweater and layered it with a coordinating button-down.  I picked a great navy ankle pant with heels in the same color, which help elongate her legs.  I added a statement necklace to help make the outfit feel a little special, simple earrings, and one bold bracelet as apposed to a bunch that would get in the way of her being able to do her job.

Wear Wear-hourglass

Michelle is very busy on the weekends with her family and loves outfits with scarves, boots, and skinny jeans.  Because of her hourglass figure, skinny jeans are flattering on her, with or without boots.  I created an outfit for her that fits her style and will look great on her too, as well as you other girls with an hourglass figure. I actually feel this look also works well for rectangles like me where adding the layer of the cardigan helps define your waist.

Weekend Wear- hourglass

Lastly I created a date night look for Michelle. She loves blazers but doesn't wear them to work, due to her need to move freely, so she loves to wear them for date nights and on the weekend.  She also loves to dress up jeans, me too!  Keeping the tips in mind for dressing for her hourglass figure, I created a date night look for her as well as you other hour glass figures.  Soft fabrics help accentuate your figure, so picked a great v-neck colbalt tee to pair with this blazer.  I also added a straight leg jean and heels too.  Layering necklaces is one of my favorite things and I find it works great with v-neck shirts, I added a simple short gold arrow necklace then a long gold one. I finished off the look with a couple of fun bracelet and a simple black clutch.

Date Night- Hourglass

I also made a handy image for you to pin here too. : )

I've had so much fun creating this post, and a big thanks to Michelle for being such a willing participant.  Next week I'm going to share tips on how to style a pear shape.  I'm still looking for participants for an apple shape.  If that's you, I'd love to create some outfits for you.  Email me here.

Also, not sure of your shape?  Check out this post for specific characteristics for each shape.

One last thing, I loved seeing everyone's Style Swaps last Friday! I'd love to have you all join me this Friday, details on how to link up here.
