Big Little Lies

It's not very often that I finish an adult novel in less than two days, but Big Little Lies by Laine Moriarty was a book I just couldn't put down. The story takes place in Australia, so it was a different setting than my usual reads, which I liked. Our main characters are Madeline, Celeste, and Jane, three very different women who all have one thing in common: their children are all starting kindergarten at the same time.

Madeline is the oldest and most outspoken of the three women. While driving to take her daughter to kindergarten orientation she sees a teenager texting in the car in front of her and feels the need to get out of her car at a stop and tell the teen to get off her phone. As you can imagine, this doesn't go well and she falls in the stiletto heels she's wearing and twists her ankle.

Jane, who is also taking her son to orientation, sees this happen and stops to help. An unlikely friendship is born. Jane, who is only 24 and a single mom has seemingly nothing in common with Madeline, but it's just the friendship she needs.

Celeste, a beautiful, wealthy women has been friends will Madeline for years,  and is the third women is this tight friendship. She has twin boys and a high-powered husband who is often times away traveling.

After an incident at kindergarten orientation the school year is off to a rocky start. We begin to see peeks into an event called trivia night which happens nearly six months later. The details are unclear, other than the fact that someone ends up dead. We don't know who, but as we read through the story told from these three women's point of views the truth begins to reveal itself.

Although the book looks rather large, it is a pretty quick read. Two of Grant's nap times and two evenings was all it took to finish this page-turner. Laine Moriarty sure knows how to write, and if you're looking for a good read, this is your book.

  1. I LOVED this book! Have you read any other Liane Moriartys? This was my first one and I've since read The Husband's Secret and What Alice Forgot. I flew through those just as fast as Big Little Lies.
